Before you join a match
Check that you have the sequel by Trapstar Games: the Steam app number is 5155360. The original Hood Warfare is a different listing. Use the official store link rather than a download button on an unrelated fan site.
Follow the Windows download and installation guide, compare your PC with the published requirements, and make sure the game has finished installing and updating. The listed minimum is a hardware reference, not a promise about frame rate on your particular machine.
Open the available control and video options before entering a busy match. Check your movement, aim, fire and reload bindings there. Use the bindings displayed in your current game, and start with a sensitivity that feels controllable.
Finding stick aiming difficult? Start with a controlled practice session
In a Steam Deck report, scallythedon described playing on low settings but struggling with aiming without aim assist. Lawlfaace's follow-up also described a learning curve before settling into the game. These reports concern their Steam Deck sessions; they are not a guarantee about every controller or the options in a later version.
How should I start if aiming with sticks feels difficult? Use the custom bot-match checklist to keep the map and mode steady. First check the movement, look, aim and reload bindings offered in your current settings. Pick a visible landmark and practise turning toward it before adding a busy objective. Change one sensitivity option at a time and keep the change only if you can control the view more comfortably. This is a practice plan, not a tested controller preset.
Once turning and aiming feel manageable, practise one scoring action from the mode reference. You can then compare the same setup online without also changing the map, mode and weapon.
A first-session plan you can follow
- Choose one map and mode. The official listing confirms that custom matches let you choose the map, mode and match settings, and add bots. Use that controlled setting to get oriented.
- Say the objective in one sentence. For Chain Snatch it is collecting chains; for Turf War it is holding territory. Read the mode reference if you are unsure.
- Keep your setup steady. Try a weapon and the equipment currently available to you. Changing the gun, attachments and sensitivity at the same time makes it harder to tell which change helped.
- Learn a small route. Pick two recognisable places and practise moving between them. Look for a way back as well as a way forward. Repeat that small route until you recognise both approaches.
- Move online when the basics feel familiar. Expect human opponents to behave differently from bots. Use the same map and mode when possible so fewer things change at once.
Use the result to choose your next session
Ask what stopped you completing the objective. If you lost track of the destination, return to map practice. If you understood the route but kept taking awkward fights, review where you committed rather than immediately changing every attachment.
When you want a new item, check which progression track owns it. Weapons and equipment come from reputation levels; attachments come from weapon challenges; skins come from kills with the relevant gun. Our unlock guide turns that distinction into a check-before-you-play workflow.
Do not assume a bot session advances every challenge. The store confirms bot matches, but does not state the full progression-credit rules. Check the relevant in-game counter before spending a session on a particular unlock.
